In 1991 SRZ was established as an independent Urban + Regional Research institution by members of staff of the former Vienna Urban Research Institute (Institut für Stadtforschung). It is owned and managed by the people who work here, it is not government funded and not affiliated with university institutions. SRZ's economic base are research contracts and research subsidies. Among the institutions commissioning or funding SRZ research projects are several Austrian Federal Ministeries, Austrian regional governments, city councils, the Austrian Chamber of Labour, and the European Commission. |

In the early nineties, activities at SRZ were focussed on traditional subjects of urbanism and spatial development. Since then new social science approaches have been explored and our professional practice now covers a multitude of research areas. For each of these research areas you will find the appropriate expert within SRZ's scientific team. The team certainly deserves to be called interdisciplinary: it combines the academic qualifications of architecture, sociology, political sciences, town and country planning, psychology, business management and computer science. |
